Ottawa Now - U.S. staring down hundreds of millions of dollars in lost alcohol sales

September 1, 2026

Last March, Ontario removed every single drop of American booze from the LCBO shelves, and they have stayed in the storage units ever since. No more California wines. No more of Kentucky’s finest bourbon. Now, that reality would have changed if Canada had inked an agreement with the Trump administration, but talks fell apart at the eleventh hour. Ontario’s Premier, meantime, won’t be entertaining the idea of restocking any U.S. booze until Canada gets a fair deal. So how has this impacted the other side of the border? Chris Swonger is the President and CEO of the USA Distilled Spirits Council. He says, when it comes to lost sales, we are talking hundreds of millions of dollars.
