Hour 3 of Ottawa Now for Tues. September 8th, 2026

September 8, 2026

The Carney government has installed a series of counter-tariffs against the United States. Effective this morning, 50 percent tariffs have been placed on a variety of American dairy products, while certain steel and aluminum products have also risen from 25 percent to 50 percent. We also have 25 percent tariffs on select U.S. wood products. And yes, even makeup products are being taxed. Prime Minister Carney addressed Canadians in a 15-minute online video, warning of the tough times ahead and outlining a series of federal support measures that will be put in place. But it’s no secret that Canadian consumers will be taking the brunt of the pain. Are these retaliatory tariffs necessary? Is the short-term pain worth it? Guest host Chris Holski sifts through the CFRA textboard and tackles today’s Question of the Day.
