The City of Ottawa says that, effective this year, water testing updates at four city-run beaches would be shifting to a weekly checkup. For the longest time, daily checkups would be the unquestioned normal, as crews would eagerly search for the smallest speck of E. coli bacteria. If there was enough to cause fear, these beaches would be off-limits until the water quality improved. And while these alterations are significant, they would still meet provincial standards. However, the Ottawa Riverkeeper wants City Staff to reverse course and switch back to the old normal. In your view, what...

Have you ever been charged $1,500 on a water bill…for only 2 months of usage? That happened to Paul Malouin, an Ottawa senior resident who was completely taken aback when he saw the charges. It was the result of a leaky toilet in Paul’s home, according to the City of Ottawa, even though Paul says he couldn’t find any leaky toilets. Last month, in a memo to City Council, Ottawa Public Health said it would no longer do daily water testing updates at a quartet of Ottawa’s city-run beaches. Instead, water samples would be collected on a weekly basis, which would be enough to meet provincial standards. This is done to detect the presence of E. coli bacteria at municipal beaches, and determine how safe it is for public swimming. However, the Ottawa Riverkeeper is not onside with this objective, arguing that it’s a major step back by the City of Ottawa. And now, CEO Laura Reinsborough is launching a petition...

It’s officially official, everybody! And depending on who you ask, perhaps this isn’t news you want to hear. Regardless of where you stand, parkgoers will soon be able to enjoy a cold one in select Ottawa parks, as City Council just passed a bylaw change for the Summer months. If you are 19-and-older, you can legally enjoy an alcoholic beverage between Canada Day and Halloween, but only under certain hours of the day and within certain designations. Where these perks will be applied is now in the hands of City Council. Kitchissippi councillor Jeff Leiper joins the program...

Once the first series of Canadian-targeted tariffs was launched by U.S. President Donald Trump, American-made booze was quickly removed from Canadian shelves. That was a few months ago. A few months later, U.S. liquor is seeing a resurgence in Alberta and Saskatchewan. That is likely not happening here in Ontario, as Premier Doug Ford vows to keep the boycott in place until all tariffs are removed. Critics are growing curious as to why Canadian provinces are removing the limited amount of leverage they possess against American markets. Is it a good idea for Ontario to stick to their guns...
