The Canada Revenue Agency has offered contract extensions to around 850 call-centre employees as their union sounds the alarm over staffing levels. CRA spokesperson Etienne Biram says the workers, whose contracts were set to expire in September, were contacted about the decision last week.

Besides Brazil, the bloc includes Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay, while Bolivia is in the process of becoming a full member.

Joan Leishman was a globe-trotting journalist, a champion of refugee writers in Canada and a tireless human-rights advocate. This December, worldwide history will be made down under, as Australia implements a social media ban for children aged 16-and-under. This new legislation, known as the Online Safety Amendment Bill, was passed in November 2024.
