A bill that would have allowed Parliamentarians to opt out of swearing an Oath of Allegiance to King Charles was killed by a group of cross-partisan MPs. Dating back to the 1867 Constitution, MPs and Senators must affirm their oath to ‘bear true allegiance’ to the British Monarch before taking their seats after an election.
