Dear Ottawa residents,
Wednesday, October 9th is an important day for the City of Ottawa as it tables its draft Transportation Master Plan (TMP), which will help determine if our streets are designed for all people and modes of transportation, or just cars.
Since March, Ecology Ottawa and many community organizations supportive of sustainable transportation have been urging the City to pass a strong Complete Streets policy as part of its update to the Official Plan and the TMP.
We’ve made great progress. So far, more than 2,000 people have signed our related petition (if you have not yet done so, please sign today)! And, organizations representing more than 100,000 Ottawa residents have joined in to urge City Council to pass a strong Complete Streets policy.
However, when the city tabled its draft Official Plan update in June, not one mention was made of Complete Streets. This is strange, since it was the City itself that said Complete Streets was one of a number of preliminary policy proposals that was under consideration for this Official Plan update.
Indeed, in order to support the City’s focus on sustainable transportation, the Official Plan and the TMP absolutely need to include the City’s promised Complete Streets policy.
It is urgent that as many people as possible contact their elected officials, including the Mayor, to urge the city to pass a strong Complete Streets policy; please contact them today! Click here to find contact information for your city councillor, and please phone and e-mail them and tell them you support the City passing a strong Complete Streets policy.
These next few weeks are crunch time for Complete Streets in Ottawa; please ensure you voice your support today for the nation's capital making serious progress on sustainable transportation.
Sincerely,
Karen, Brigitte, Velta, Ben, Valentin, Graham, Trevor & the entire Ecology Ottawa team
P.S. – Send a strong message to TransCanada: We don't want your oily pipeline!
Thursday, Oct. 10; 4-8pm in Stittsville
Join Ecology Ottawa and many other groups on October 10th. We will be attending TransCanada's 'Public Hearing' in Stittsville—their only stop in Ottawa—between 4 and 8pm. This is our chance to send them a strong message that we're better off, SansTransCanada. We don't want any Tar Sands pipeline on the Rideau River, we don't want climate change anywhere. Please RSVP if you can attend on our website or on Facebook.
