Despite the tragic events on Parliament Hill on Wednesday, many citizens will come together and participate in building an even stronger democracy for the City of Ottawa. Media are invited to Ottawa City Idol, an alternative election night, showcasing the benefits of Ranked Choice Voting (RCV), a new voting system being proposed for Ottawa’s municipal elections.
Ottawa City Idol will bring some of Ottawa’s prominent community leaders together in an election style debate and share their ideas on how best to make Ottawa a better city. Following a question period, participants, both online and in-person, will vote for their preferred candidates using Ranked Choice Voting (RCV). In light of events in Ottawa yesterday, the event will also be a celebration of the strength of democracy in our city.

Ottawa123 is a non-partisan group of volunteers asking Ottawa City Council to change the current first-past-the-post voting system to a Ranked Choice Voting in time for the 2018 municipal election. 40 city council candidates support making the switch, and over 1700 have signed the petition online.
