Taking the Italy Out of Little Italy

May 11, 2015

Watching City Hall destroy a community by allowing development without fully appreciating the consequnces is frustrating.

When does the dream end, and reality takes over?

Like many people, I have enjoyed several attractions  and events that took place along Preston Street – Italian week with the smell of BBQ'd sausages and loud music, buying wine making equipment at Preston Hardware, attending dinner dances at St. Anthony’s Soccer Club Hall, enjoying a gelato on a hot summer evening. Walking along Preston Street after the city / community spent so much money on the sidewalks, sculptures, and murals really gave you a taste of Italy.

Those are my memories of Little Italy. But now? Yes, some of the very same things I just listed are still there. But, they are getting harder and harder to find. Once the proposed high rise condo buildings are finished? Well, this community won’t be “little” anymore, and it certainly won’t be Italian. Ciao.
