So if I understand correctly, the government of Hungary is intending to give money to support the construction of the much talked about monument to honour Victims of Communism, in downtown Ottawa.
I personally think that it makes more sense to have a memorial to recognize victims of all forms of tyranny, not just Communism. But that is not why I am writing. As we have seen this past weeks, the treatment of refugees at the Hungarian border is hardly what one would call compassionate. As the number of helpless people rises, the response of the Hungarian government has been to erect fences, close borders, and force people to go somewhere else.
The Hungarian government is ready to commemorate atrocities done to their people by the Communists, but feel no guilt about refusing to help others who are fleeing present day atrocities.
