Chiarelli and Meilleur have a change of heart on Hydro One

October 1, 2015

QUEEN'S PARK - Wednesday, Leader of the Official Opposition Patrick Brown questioned Energy Minister Bob Chiarelli in the Legislature over revelations that the Minister previously supported retaining Hydro One as a publicly owned asset.

In 2002, the City of Ottawa passed a motion stressing that without extensive public consultation, Hydro One would be best kept in public hands.

“The Minister of Energy supported this resolution as Mayor of Ottawa in 2002,” stated Leader Patrick Brown.  “Can the Minister explain why he’s no longer prepared to fight for the people of Ottawa in their opposition to the Hydro One fire sale?”

Liberal MPP and Attorney General Madeleine Meilleur, who was an Ottawa city councillor at the time, also supported the motion.

“The resolution concludes urging the Government of Ontario to conduct a broad public consultation process on the sale of provincially owned electricity assets,” added Leader Patrick Brown.  “Despite this pledge from the former Mayor of Ottawa, 166 municipalities have passed resolutions opposing the sale largely because of a lack of public consultation.  Can the Minister of Energy explain why he no longer believes municipalities should be consulted on the fire sale of Hydro One?”
