Death by a Thousand Cuts

October 23, 2016

The decision abut the future site for the Civic Hospital may now be open and transparent. But that does not mean that the correct decision will be made.

The final decision as to where our new hospital will go, is almost here. I am being prematurely pessimistic, but my fear is that after all the openness and transparency, we are going to end up with a hospital attached to a parking lot on the Central Experimental Farm. But don’t worry we are told. It is only a small parcel of land – just 24 hectares.  It is not needed by Ag Canada, and it won’t be missed.

I’ve  been around long enough to remember  that what is now Central Park – land west of Merivale, north of Baseline  - once was part of the Central Experimental Farm. Now that 91 hectares is covered with houses and highrises. Not needed, and not missed. And did I read that the proposed Baseline transit corridor will require widening of Baseline from Prince of Wales to Woodruffe Ave. Another small strip of the Central Experimental Farm will be lost. Not needed? Won’t be missed?
