Child Protection in Ontario is all about, "At Least Meeting The Minimums."

Wynne's angel, Mary Ballantyne, CEO of the Ontario Association of Children's Aid Societies,, says she wants the public to have confidence "that when someone knocks on their door they know that they have met these minimum requirements."

New recruits will have to pass standardized course and final exam during a four-month training period before they’re authorized to apprehend children but many critics say it's too little too late for tens of thousands of families and the union representing child protection workers (CUPE) is firmly opposed to ethical oversight from the College of Social Work, and the Ministry of Children and Youth Services, which regulates and funds child protection, is staying out of the fight. .

WHAT FIGHT -  IF THE GOVERNMENT WON'T ENFORCE THE LAW AND THE SOCIETY DOESN'T REQUIRE REGISTRATION AND THE UNION (THE CAS EMPLOYEES) IS AGAINST REGISTRATION AND THE GOVERNMENT IS STAYING OUT OF IT SO WHO DOES THAT LEAVE TO FIGHT WITH?

Ballantyne notes child protection workers already receive training after being hired by Ontario’s 47 privately run societies. The new authorization program revamps, expands and standardizes that training province-wide, from how to conduct abuse investigations to how to assess whether parental neglect is hurting a child’s development.

Ballantyne flatly states those who do not register with the college will be unable to perform child protection work in Ontario in a few years.

But Nancy Simone, president of the Canadian Union of Public Employees local representing 275 workers at the Catholic Children’s Aid Society of Toronto, argues child protection workers already have levels of oversight that include workplace supervisors, family courts, coroners’ inquests and annual case audits by the ministry.

“Our work is already regulated to death.”

EVERY MAJOR NEWSPAPER IN ONTARIO DISAGREES WITH THE STATEMENT ABOVE STATING VERY CLEARLY THERE IS NO OVERSIGHT AND NO ACCOUNTABILITY IN ONTARIO FOR THE CAS.

REGULATIONS MEAN NOTHING WITHOUT OVERSIGHT AND AN INTERNAL COMPLAINT PROCESS CAN'T REPLACE ACTUAL OVERSIGHT BY THE COLLEGE OF SOCIAL WORK AND THE GOVERNMENT.

Protection workers, she adds, are overworked, which is made worse by ministry budget cuts. That’s usually why standards aren’t met, she argues. (Excuses, excuses) “Our concern is that the college will focus blame on individual workers rather than system-wide issues.”

So if we were talking about a dangerous doctor, nurse or teacher we shouldn't hold them accountable or do anything about them except file a complain about the hospitals or schools to the hospitals and schools???

After repeatedly promising to give in writing a list of concerns and the basis for them to the parents - this woman close 50 days later claims telling the parents her concerns about their children's safety might inadvertently harm their children - but if that's so, isn't preventing them from addressing her concerns (if valid) more likely to harm their children?

Then informs the mother court papers have been filed and refuses to serve the papers till 8 days before the first appearance in court and calls us uncooperative after we let her into our home on several occasions and speak with our children. WE refuse to sign consents.

As you know (or not) all responding materials must be filed at least four days before the first appearance leaving them hours to prepare, make copies, file with the court, serve them to the Kingston CAS office and go back to Smiths Falls and confirm the responding materials have been served with less than a full work day to do so.

Despite the courts being closed on Friday after having only one working day to gather and prepare our response, we swore in our responding materials and served the CAS as required.
