At COP16 biodiversity summit, Canada pushes for high seas treaty to protect marine environments

As the COP16 biodiversity conference comes to a close, Canada and other countries are stressing the urgent need to ratify a legally binding treaty for high seas marine protected areas, aiming for enforcement by 2025.“In Canada, being bordered by three oceans, we know and understand the importance of ocean protection,” said Environment and Climate Change Minister Steven Guilbeault in a phone interview, adding that Canada’s commitment is visible in the government’s achievements since 2015.
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith on Saturday urged roughly 6,000 United Conservative Party members to hold her and her government to account, but not to splinter into competing camps and attack each other.UCP members on Friday and Saturday converged in Red Deer for the party’s annual meeting, where attendees will vote on whether they support Ms. Smith’s leadership of the party. Voting started Saturday morning and results are expected in the early evening.
