First Nations chiefs still debating new AFN-led child welfare reform deal with Ottawa after rejecting previous offers

First Nations chiefs across Canada have directed the Assembly of First Nations to renegotiate a landmark child welfare deal with Canada after they rejected a draft settlement agreement weeks ago.The $48-billion final settlement agreement negotiated by the AFN, the Chiefs of Ontario and Nishnawbe Aski Nation and Indigenous Services Canada was reached in July and was the culmination of two decades of court action and negotiations to reform on-reserve child-welfare services that were found to be discriminatory.
