The family of a Deer Lake FIrst Nation boy who was denied medical transportation coverage because he didn't yet have an Indian status card is calling for changes to the Non-Insured Health Benefits program. Health-care workers and community leaders in northwestern Ontario say problems with the federal program are leading to poorer health outcomes for First Nations people.
