Supreme Court of Canada agrees to hear legal challenge to Quebec’s controversial secularism law

The Supreme Court of Canada will hear a landmark case on Quebec’s controversial Bill 21, a law that uses the Charter of Rights and Freedoms' notwithstanding clause to override fundamental rights such as freedom of religion.The top court announced its decision Thursday morning. The hearing is not yet scheduled but may be this fall, after a likely federal election this spring. There is, on average, an eight-month period between the top court accepting a case and the hearing itself.
Cindy Rowan says she's relieved her son, Chase Delorme-Rowan, is also talking for the first time since Jan. 14.

The RCMP say three men in Quebec have been charged for helping to smuggle people into Canada from the United States.During two separate events last year, the three men were intercepted in vehicles near the U.S. border in the Montérégie region southwest of Montreal, allegedly waiting to pick up people who had crossed into Canada illegally.
