A long-time Alberta New Democrat member of the legislature is resigning his seat, sparking what will be the third provincial by-election in Alberta since the 2023 provincial vote.Rod Loyola was first elected in 2015, and won his third term representing the Edmonton-Ellerslie riding two years ago.The Alberta Speaker’s office says Loyola’s resignation is to officially take effect Tuesday.
John Conway stood against the social structures that disadvantage the poor and working classes, called upon the oppressed to demand better for themselves and their families, and fought for quality education, which he deemed to be a great leveller.“Where is the alternative systemic vision,” Prof. Conway wrote in the socialist journal The Bullet in 2016. Where is “a world beyond capitalism with economic security and a guaranteed future, a world we can embrace and ask our children to embrace, a world we can realize through our democratic collective action?”
