I, too, wanted to carry a camera and document life. My father couldn’t afford to send me abroad for school. So I studied journalism at Al-Aqsa University in Gaza City. But then I heard the Israeli Iron Dome air defence system. I knew this was not a drill. I woke Amany and said we are in a war now. I was working out of Nasser Hospital and I heard the explosion from there. I called Amany. She was screaming. Two of our kids were hit by glass and shrapnel; it made holes in their hands. With a friend, I picked them up and took them to the hospital. I told my family, you have to leave. The danger is everywhere. You have to go to a patch of undeveloped land that my family owns in the west, I told them. My parents objected, saying they couldn’t live in the desert. But I said that we have to. We have to save our lives. We went and we built tents to live in. I had a brother in Calgary; he raised the funds through a GoFundMe, and I had to send him all our documents to apply. I would go up to the sixth floor of the hospital, and use an eSim from my brother to try to send the documents without losing the connection. I did this 10 or even 12 times a day. Go up the stairs.
