Two Runners
May 22, 2025

One an athlete
since way back when
who understands
the exact speed
of the uniformed self
circling the track
in the lined pages
of the log
that preserves his every mile
and pulling away
stride by spiked stride—
the other late
to the game, brimful
of wonder at what might
have been achieved.
At the all-comers’
meet, whittled old timers
make up the stagger
chasing fit, neon
young men, just kids, quick
and yet to arrive.
After, they are hoarse
and slow. They jog
but soon stand staring
at the sheet of seconds and tenths
taped to the stadium
wall. They are speechless
and from the bleachers
indistinguishable, each
alike in his hunger. The post Two Runners first appeared on The Walrus.
