Luxembourg opens Ottawa embassy as country moves to expand economy beyond financial services

Luxembourg is officially opening an embassy in Ottawa as the small European nation moves to expand its economy beyond financial services.The country of 680,000, commonly referred to as a tax haven, is one of Europe’s most sparsely populated nations.Luxembourg is a major financial hub and Statistics Canada ranks it as the eighth-largest source of foreign direct investment in Canada, which does not include other countries’ indirect funding through Luxembourg.
Officials say a wildfire near Squamish, B.C., which forced the evacuation of the nearby Alice Lake Provincial Park and triggered a local state of emergency earlier this week, is now classified as being held after help from cool, cloudy weather conditions.The BC Wildfire Service announced the fire was being held, meaning the fire is expected to remain within its current perimeter based on fuel and weather conditions and resource availability, on Saturday afternoon.
