Big Wheels, Big Dreams: The City’s Big Wheel Expo Delights Thousands
July 4, 2025
The Public Works Big Wheels Expo rolled into the Ottawa Stadium once again on June 8 for its third stellar year, continuing to inspire wonder and fascination in families and vehicle enthusiasts. Last year, over 3000 residents flocked to the stadium, brimming with excitement, curiosity, and a keen eagerness to meet the fleet—and this year was no different. The much-awaited Big Wheels Expo drew thousands of residents across the city to take an up-close-and-personal look at the titanic machines that keep our beloved city clean, green and moving.
The event opened with a sensory-friendly time, offering quieter conditions for visitors who benefit from lighter crowds before launching into full swing at 9:30 am onwards. The Expo buzzed with electric energy from excited attendees as they explored the impressive fleet that one usually only sees hard at work from a distance.
Among the featured vehicles were a snowplow, baseball infield groomer, sidewalk sweeper, hydraulic crane truck, garbage trucks, road painting trucks, a log truck, and so much more! Children and adults alike were delighted by such a hands-on experience, observing every switch and button and learning all about what makes these colossal machines tick. Many young children hopped onto the trucks’ driver seat and learned all about the fleet from their operators, who offered a wealth of knowledge and expertise.
Awe sparked throughout the day with attendees and staff in high spirits. Beyond the incredible vehicles, the Expo also featured interactive stations and family-friendly activities. City staff offered educational booths, games, giveaways, face painting, and even a water play area featuring eco-friendly reusable water balloons and sensory bins to encourage exploration, learning, and play. Many departments in the City joined forces, and together, demonstrated the warm, collaborative spirit that keeps Ottawa thriving.
As if the day couldn’t get any better, the excitement turned into roaring cheers and chants as attendees gathered to watch the Ottawa Titans baseball game – a fitting end to a day brimming with smiles, laughter, and learning.
The Big Wheels Expo marked yet another brilliantly successful, much-awaited event that did not disappoint. This proves that the event is more than just talking about big trucks, gears, and operations. It’s about inspiring the next generation, demonstrating interdepartmental collaboration, and highlighting the City’s commitment to making Ottawa a vibrant, livable, and thriving city.
Mark your calendars for next year!
Whether you’re passionate about vehicles, exploring future career paths, or simply looking for an event that offers both amusement and a hands-on learning experience, the Big Wheels Expo is an annual event that offers something for everyone. Stay tuned as we certainly look forward to welcoming you next year for another day filled with fun, learning, and community pride.
