July 15, 2025
Earlier today, Prime Minister Mark Carney was using a different tone when discussing trade negotiations with the United States. Ahead of an urgent Cabinet meeting, he told the media to tamper expectations of a tariff-free trade deal with Canada’s closest neighbour. CFRA’s Andrew Pinsent delivers the latest developments in Hour 1. Later in the show, we pick the brain of Joseph Steinberg, a Professor of Economics at the University of Toronto. He studies the economic impact of tariffs, and the future of trading with America. But first, we bring you up to speed on today’s top headlines.
The federal government’s decision to lift most retaliatory tariffs on American goods is expected to deliver some relief to consumers, although experts watching the trade war say the “buy Canada” movement may continue to limit demand for U.S. products. Prime Minister Mark Carney announced on Friday that Ottawa will mirror U.S. tariffs by only imposing them on goods that are not compliant with the United States-Mexico-Canada trade agreement, which he said was designed to reset trade negotiations with President Donald Trump. The change will take effect on Sept. 1.
