Wildfire north of Nanaimo, B.C. declared under control

A wildfire burning north of Nanaimo that had forced hundreds to evacuate is now under control.
The BC Wildfire Service announced Saturday afternoon that crews have made significant progress in combating the Wesley Ridge blaze burning near Cameron Lake.
On a Saturday night last November, Ruby Kooner and her 13-year-old dog Amber set out for their routine walk before bedtime.Normally it was a quick outing, on a leash, along a path outside Ms. Kooner’s condominium in Ordnance Triangle Park, a community wedged between two rail corridors near Toronto’s historic Fort York site.

Surrounded by police and fire officials in dress uniforms, Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim declared Monday that a special, seven-month police “surge” in the Downtown Eastside has significantly reduced crime there and in surrounding areas.He and Vancouver Police Chief Steve Rai announced that the lessons from what was called Task Force Barrage will be used for a new model of policing the Downtown Eastside, with a reorganized management system at the top and more collaboration with community groups.
