Ottawa Now - Parents in Little Italy raise concerns about portable toilets at nearby public school

August 29, 2025

Parents at an elementary school in Little Italy are concerned that porta-potties and portables are taking up valuable yard space on school grounds. Louise Arbour Elementary on Beech Street, which is operated by a French public school board, already had 7 portables installed. But for the start of this year’s learning schedule, an eighth portable classroom and a pair of portable toilets have been added. Back in 2022, the Ford government had announced plans for a brand-new Louise Arbour school grounds on Somerset Street. However, that building won’t be built until the 2027-28 learning season. Alison Audet-Smedley has a child in Senior Kindergarten who attends the school. And while her courses won’t be scheduled inside the portables, she will have to use the portable washrooms because the school bathrooms are located in separate detached buildings. She joins Kristy Cameron on Ottawa Now.
