Ottawa Now - River Ward councillor open to seizing vehicles from two-time stunt driving violators

September 5, 2025

If you have fallen into the stunt driving trap, you are starting to make a lot of enemies in Canada’s Capital. For those curious about the actual definition of stunt driving, it’s when drivers are riding 40 to 50 km/h over the speed limit, usually reaching or even surpassing 150 km/h. This umbrella of road violations also includes aggressive driving, which ranges from driving too closely to other vehicles or cutting off nearby riders. Following a conviction for either offense, the driver is given an immediate 30-day license suspension, a 14-day vehicle impoundment, a jail term of up to 6 months, and a fine that ranges from $2,000 to $10,000. The pain doesn’t stop once you get out of jail, either. You also receive a ‘post-conviction’ license suspension, a loss of 6 Demerit points, a mandatory driver improvement course, and a potential hit to your insurance reputation. While those punishments may sound pretty steep on paper, River Ward councillor Riley Brockington is open to adding another dose of punishment for second-time offenders. That would be a permanent vehicle seizure, conducted by the province. He explains further on today’s Ottawa Now.

Although the York Regional Police chief walked back his advice to “just comply” during a home invasion, the initial message was criticized by many, including by actors south of the border. One of the American actors who commented was Kevin Sorbo, known for his role as Greek demi-God Hercules on the eponymous television show from 1995 to 1999. In a post on X on Sept. 4, he called out Chief Jim MacSween by name. MacSween “told his citizens that ‘your best defence is to just comply,'” wrote Sorbo.
