Actor James McAvoy reportedly assaulted in Toronto bar by a random person

September 10, 2025

James McAvoy was reportedly “punched” in a Toronto bar.

The actor was in town for the premiere and promotion of his directorial debut, California Schemin, at the Toronto Film Festival .

The incident took place Monday evening and was first reported by People magazine . According to multiple news outlets, the incident is said to have taken place at Charlotte’s Room, a pub located downtown on King Street W.

“James was having a casual get-together with the producers of his movie and, as he later learned when speaking with the staff, there was a man who drank too much who was getting escorted out. James’s back was to him and the man just punched him,” a source close to McAvoy told People magazine.

The incident was reportedly unprovoked as the 46-year-old had never interacted with the man before, EW magazine reports. Other people at the bar are reported to have intervened and tried to restrain the man, who was then asked to leave and escorted out.

The Guardian reported that the actor reportedly “stayed at the bar and even laughed off the incident with other patrons and the staff.” The incident wasn’t reported to the Toronto Police, CBC News notes, adding TIFF and Charlotte’s Room didn’t immediately respond for comment.
