Alberta to use notwithstanding clause on its three transgender laws, leaked memo shows

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith has directed officials to invoke the Charter’s notwithstanding clause in amending three laws that affect transgender people, says a leaked government memo obtained by The Canadian Press.
The internal document sent Sept. 10 by the justice department asks other departments to assemble information as per a directive from Smith’s office to invoke the clause.

An Ontario man who was a member of a now-defunct neo-Nazi group, Atomwaffen Division, pleaded guilty on Thursday to terrorism charges, admitting to producing white-supremacist propaganda that prosecutors say may have inspired several deadly attacks around the world. Matthew Althorpe is one of several Canadian members of the designated terrorist group who has been convicted in Ontario’s courts in recent months.

A Canadian whose parents’ remains were held hostage in Gaza, and who has friends still captive there, says she hopes those who killed her parents and other Canadian victims will be prosecuted. Iris Weinstein Haggai says she can’t let herself get too excited by the news that a ceasefire deal has been reached between Israel and Hamas, adding that she knows from experience that “until it’s done, it’s not done.” But she’s hopeful that all 48 hostages will be returned home soon, some to their families, and others to be buried, like her parents were in June.
