Ottawa Now - City Council to debate if Queen's Park should assume control of Ottawa's O-Train system

October 7, 2025

Should the Ford government take over responsibility of Ottawa’s O-Train system? That’s what City Council will be voting on during Wednesday’s meeting. During the provincial election campaign last February, Premier Doug Ford announced that the province would upload oversight of Ottawa’s LRT to Metrolinx, potentially saving the city $4 billion over the course of 30 years. A motion created by Transit Committee Chair Glen Gower, and seconded by Mayor Sutcliffe, recommends that City Council direct Ottawa’s Mayor and Ottawa’s City Manager to Queen’s Park to start negotiations with the province. Laura Shantz of Ottawa Transit Riders is concerned that Ottawa won’t be properly represented at Queen’s Park, but is cautiously open to this potential resolution if it creates a system that works and the financial assistance that is needed. Shantz joins Kristy Cameron on today’s Ottawa Now.
