Calgary elects new mayor, Edmonton race unclear as hand-counted results trickle in

Voters in Calgary have chosen a new mayor, but Edmonton’s municipal election results are still unclear as of Tuesday, one day after new rules contributed to long wait times at polling stations and ballot counts trickling in at a snail’s pace across Alberta.

Jeromy Farkas, a former councillor who attempted to reshape his reputation as a conservative firebrand into a centrist candidate in Calgary, unseated incumbent mayor Jyoti Gondek, though the initial results will likely face a recount.
