Premier Smith set to deliver throne speech as Alberta teachers plan strike at legislature

October 23, 2025

Thousands of teachers and their supporters are expected to converge at the Alberta Legislature for a massive rally Thursday, coinciding with Premier Danielle Smith’s Speech from the Throne.

Roughly 750,000 students have been out of class since Oct. 6, when more than 50,000 teachers launched the largest strike in the province’s history. Ms. Smith, who leads the governing United Conservative Party, has pledged to table back-to-work legislation on Oct. 27.
