Robert Fife to receive Hyman Solomon Award for Excellence in Public Policy Journalism

The Globe and Mail’s Ottawa bureau chief, Robert Fife, will receive the 2026 Hyman Solomon Award for Excellence in Public Policy Journalism.

The award, given out by the Public Policy Forum, recognizes journalists whose work provides insight into public policy and explains how it affects the country and the lives of Canadians.

A tense standoff in Welland, Ont., continued into a second day Saturday, after an officer was shot Friday during a confrontation at a former church occupied by a religious sect that has a history of disputes with the municipality.The shooting put people on high alert in a neighbourhood that includes the city’s main hospital, several schools, nursing homes and dozens of residences and businesses.
