Ottawa launches AI registry showing breadth of tech’s use in public service

The federal government has launched a public registry to keep Canadians in the loop on its growing use of artificial intelligence.
The registry lists more than 400 areas where AI is currently being explored, developed, implemented or deployed within the government, including early research projects and tools for operations and service delivery.

Hydro-Québec is now buying more power from outside the province than it’s exporting, a significant reversal from years past caused by a drop in its northern water reservoirs at a time of surging demand. The utility, Canada’s biggest producer of electricity, purchased about 10 terawatt-hours of power at a price of 5 cents a kilowatt-hour for the first nine months of the year, according to its latest quarterly report published Friday. It sold about 8 twh at 15 cents a kwh over the same time outside Quebec.

First Nations are pressing the Carney government to obey a four-year-old court settlement and pass long-promised drinking water legislation before year’s end or risk more legal action. Bill C-61, the First Nations Clean Water Act, died on the order paper with the spring election call. Introduced in 2023, the proposed legislation would have set minimum standards for drinking water on reserves, acknowledged First Nations’ jurisdiction over water on their lands and recognized safe drinking water as a human right.
