High-speed rail plans get high praise in the nation's capital

The federal government announced Friday that construction on the rail line linking Ottawa and Montreal could begin as early as 2029, news that's been well-received in the environmental and business communities.

It's going to be more expensive to ride transit in Ottawa in 2026, with a 10-cent fare increase for a single adult ride coming into effect on New Year's Day.

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement warning of possible coastal flooding this weekend in southern British Columbia including both Metro Vancouver and Greater Victoria.The weather agency says the possible high water levels along the coast is due to a combination of the region “entering a period of high astronomical tides” as the Earth reaches its closest point to the Sun as well as an incoming low-pressure system.
