Police ask Welland, Ont., residents to shelter in place after officer shot

December 19, 2025

Police in Welland, Ont., are telling residents to shelter in place after an officer was shot Friday morning while responding to reports of gunfire in the city’s downtown area.

The affected area includes the city’s main hospital, several schools, nursing homes and dozens of residences and businesses near the intersection of Plymouth Road and Lincoln Street. The Welland County General Hospital and local schools are in lockdown as a precaution, police said.

It’s the second time this week a police officer has been injured in a shooting in the small, southern Ontario city, after a fatal shootout on Saturday left a man who was wanted on an arrest warrant dead.
