Ottawa’s film industry celebrating the holidays all year round

December 29, 2025

If you’re like us, every time a holiday romance pops onto your TV screen you look in the background for landmarks of your hometown. There were five more Christmas movies filmed in Ottawa in 2025 with titles like:

  • Thank God, Christmas at the Keller Ranch
  • Christmas Comedy Chaos
  • Christmas Angel Effect
  • Last Christmas Eve
  • A Culinary Christmas

Thirty films and seven television series spent more than 700 filming days in Ottawa in 2025. Most, though not all, productions work with the Ottawa Film Office to secure local talent, locations and services.

Sometimes, these locations are at City facilities. The James K. Bartleman Centre, also known as City Archives headquarters, was the scene of a film shoot in early December.

We are sworn to secrecy about the details of the film, but we can offer some photos of the areas used. Let us know when you see them on your TV screen sometime in 2026.

The film and TV industry spends an average of $50 million per year in Ottawa. The economic impact balloons to more than $120 million when you add in restaurants, hotel stays and other expenses.

Complete figures for 2025 won’t be available until January, but numbers are up from 2024 across the board.

Learn more about the film and TV industry in Ottawa by visiting the Ottawa Film Office website where you can find a Google map of movie filming locations.

The City of Ottawa plays an important role in making the film and TV industry work. In addition to funding the Ottawa Film Office, the City issued 171 film permits in 2025 and arranged for logistics that included:

  • Road closures
  • Traffic detours
  • Facility closures
  • Security
  • Paramedics
  • Parking

The City handed out 171 permits in 2025. Those in the business know that we launched a new film permit portal in 2023 to make the application process go more smoothly for everyone.

On the day Prashant Sreekumar died, he slid out of bed early to surprise his wife, Niharika, with a mug of chai. He used ChatGPT to make sure he did it right. Mr. Sreekumar, an accountant, left for work later that morning, three days before Christmas. But a few hours later he called his wife of 19 years to say his chest hurt and he was losing vision in his left eye. A client drove him to Grey Nuns Community Hospital in southeast Edmonton.
