Ottawa Now - The next stage of Ottawa's LRT is ready for a test run

The Eastern extension of Ottawa’s LRT has hit a key milestone, and is now one step closer to its long-awaited grand opening. It has achieved what OC Transpo calls ‘substantial completion’. In other words, the service is built and the infrastructure is there. And now, in theory, the municipality could begin testing protocols. However, we don’t know exactly when the trial runs will begin, as Line 1 is still operating at a reduced capacity due to January’s spalling issues. Beacon Hill-Cyrville councillor Tim Tierney, who also serves on the city's Transit Committee, joins Kristy Cameron on Ottawa Now.
In January, Alberta premier Danielle Smith issued an extraordinary threat. Unless Prime Minister Mark Carney gave Alberta more influence over judicial appointments, her government would withhold funding from the courts. In an open letter, Smith argued she wanted judges who reflected Alberta’s “distinct legal traditions”—though what those traditions are is unclear. Canada’s system is straightforward: provinces run the courts, Ottawa appoints the judges. This left many observers wondering, “Can she even do that?”
