Within the past 6 weeks, a trio of massive rainstorms have hammered Canada’s Capital, causing widespread flooding on Canada Day and pockets of flooding in select areas this week. Meantime, a new research report from CUPE’s Ontario Council of Hospital Unions is highlighting the condition of Ottawa’s hospitals. The numbers show they are currently facing a $38 million deficit. The report also says that working capital for hospitals in Ottawa – which are the funds available to cover daily expenses, including payroll and medical supplies – is currently sitting at NEGATIVE $135 million. We dig deeper with Michael Hurley, the President of CUPE’s Ontario Council of Hospital Unions.
