Canadian Immigration and Sharia Law

January 2, 2016

Liberals are emphatically Left of the former Conservative government and even Left of earlier Liberal governments. The Democrats in the USA will re-elect a Democratic president. That's just my unqualified guess. As citizens we acquire the outcomes of governmental assessments and choices. Yet among us there must be attentiveness, and among our leaders there must be prudent administrative, diplomatic and moral selections.   RON UNRUH

Canadian culture has made a perceptible shift to the Left and this is demonstrated with the election of the current Liberal federal government. The Liberal policy agenda became attractive to a majority. This government will make decisions from the Left of Centre on vital issues in 2016 and beyond. I have some apprehension about some issues and the choices the Liberals will make. One of them is Immigration and Sharia Law.

We need not impugn Liberals since this matter began within the mandate of the previous Conservative government. In a 2011 Ottawa survey 64% of Muslims desired to live under some form of Sharia law. In fact, many Muslims are living under Sharia law and it is progressing at provincial and local levels. Officials have thought this was right to do, freedom of religion you understand. Federal and provincial governments in Canada continue to implicitly recognize Sharia law for Canada's Muslim minority?  This is not nonsense. It's not fiction. It's evidence based. Many major Canadian news source has written about this.

Canadian news reports inform us that when Muslims at the local level push for Sharia law, they generally receive permission. For instance, at Valley Park Middle School, (a public school in Toronto, Ontario in 2008) each Friday afternoons, a cafeteria becomes a mosque and Muslim students listen to an imam from a community mosque and they pray towards Mecca. This practice has been echoed in schools across the country. Further, some cafeterias only serve Halal foods that have been sacrificed to Allah, the moon god. Observe that public schools in Canada do not provide facilities for the Christian students to gather and worship and they do not provide kosher food for the Jewish students.

In 2011, the municipal government of Huntingdon in the province of Quebec built a mosque, a Halal slaughterhouse and offered a 1-year property tax moratorium to attract Muslim residents.

For some years our governments have been sending welfare checks to polygamous Muslim men who raise multiple families in Canada. Thereby, they tacitly acknowledge Sharia law for Canada's Muslim minority. You may say that is impossible and illegal. Of course it is illegal but it is not impossible. Hundreds of Greater Toronto Area Muslim men in polygamous marriages, receive welfare and social benefits for each of their spouses and children. Under Islamic law, a Muslim man is permitted to have up to four spouses. Wives in polygamous marriages are recognized as spouses under the Ontario Family Law Act, providing they were legally married under Muslim laws abroad. Polygamy is a regular part of life for many Muslims. Ontario recognizes religious marriages for Muslims and others.

Citizen compassion for refugees yet disquiet about terrorist infiltration is good reason for circumspection right now, a careful, wise, equitable look at our policies and practices within our multicultural society.      RON UNRUH
