Dismay at Ottawa Elk killing

October 24, 2013

Outrage and sadness at the unnecessary killing of so much wildlife in Ottawa whenever they are encountered in urban areas.

Dear Councillor Chiarelli,

I am writing to express my extreme dismay at the unnecessary killing of the elk earlier this fall in downtown Ottawa. With a new wildlife strategy I had hoped that Ottawa would finally be implementing more long overdue progressive and humane ways of dealing with such incidents. Apparently, that is still not the case.

I am also wondering why Ottawa, who prides itself as such a green city and leader, and as the nation’s capital, has to repeatedly resort to lethal measures to deal with wildlife in our urban areas? Especially when other cities in Canada, such as Edmonton have been able to handle similar incidents without them resulting in the death of the animals e.g. there were three separate incidents involving moose (a larger species than elk) wandering into the Edmonton areas this past summer, and none of these animals were killed.

With much disappointment,
