Founded in 2006, Ecology Ottawa has grown to become the largest organization in the city focused on local environmental issues. The organization was created based on the belief that the City of Ottawa needs to become an environmental leader among Canadian cities. By increasing citizen participation in decisions that shape Ottawa’s environment, we can engage city council and encourage its improved environmental performance. Together we can bring our nation’s capital to the forefront of efforts to foster healthy communities and develop sustainable solutions.

Downtown cycling, walkability, public transit and complete streets to be focus of all candidates debate

June 10, 2014

While the announcement below is focused on Somerset Ward, the question of how people get around in downtown Ottawa (and what it will look like when thousands of buses are removed from the streets) is a city-wide issue that affects us all.

Over the next four years the Confederation LRT Line will change the face of downtown Ottawa, taking thousands of buses off the streets and offering a once in a century opportunity to build a walkable and cycling friendly Centretown. That's just one topic Somerset Ward candidates can be expected to address at the first all candidates debate of the 2014 municipal election season. This debate will focus on transportation, including cycling, walkability, public transit, roads, parking and how we build our streets and get around.

When: Monday, June 16, 2014 6:30 - 9:00 pm
Where: Knox Presbyterian Church, 120 Lisgar Str.

This is an open event and all are welcome, but RSVPs would be appreciated. You can RSVP here: http://www.ecologyottawa.org/centretwn_transp_debate

What is important to you? What questions do you have for the candidates? Please send your questions to to the following email address and, if you are selected, Rogers TV, Cable 22 will video your question before the debate:questions@centretowncitizens.ca

The event will be broadcast by Rogers TV, Cable 22, and moderated by the Ottawa Citizen's Joanne Chianello.

Notably, this fall Somerset Ward will elect a new councillor. The June 16th forum is an opportunity for citizens to make an early assessment of the candidates.
