Dumping stormwater sludge in Riverside South

February 20, 2018

To inform the broader community of the poor planning and project management practices of the City of Ottawa in Stormwater Management.

The City of Ottawa is dumping unspecified tonnes of accumulated stormwater sludge behind homes on Otter Tail Crescent in Riverside South.  The project is described as “routine” by the City’s Department of Public Works and Environmental Services, and NO CONSULTATION was held with affected residents. Only 3 working days notice was given before the heavy trucks arrived to dredge. haul and dump.  The City has avoided resident queries about why this site was chosen over more appropriate options, about the results of any contaminants testing or environmental impact work undertaken.  The site chosen is narrow, close to homes, and borders a unique stand of mature white pines and a well-used recreational pathway.  An ATIP request has been triggered.  Brian Wilson, an affected resident, expects better planning, consultation and project execution in the City’s flawed approach to storm water facility management and waste disposal.
