Elections Canada has erred because facts, although they should be the basis for political opinion, are not inherently political themselves. A campaign that makes facts available to Canadians is educational, not political.
We currently live in a dangerous world in which falsehoods are frequently accepted as “alternative facts” and truth is all too often diminished as “false news”. Yet the difference between fact and opinion cannot be blurred if we are to live in an intelligent democracy.
Consequently we must uphold facts for what they are – inescapable truths that are immutable to the opinions which may surround them.
