Paris Climate Talks Set Wrong Timeline

December 9, 2015

Concerns about our changing weather patterns are being voiced the world over.   350 Ottawa, a local environment group fighting against further climate change, is following what's happening at the critical climate talks in Paris during these last two weeks.   When a draft text suggested that we should phase out fossil fuels over this century it was clear to us that many negotiators still don't realize the urgency of the climate problem.     We are therefore asking everyone to tell our negotiators that to avoid climate catastrophe we must phase out this energy source by 2050 at the latest.

An alert to everyone:

We're learning that the draft text circulating now in Paris proposes a global energy transition 'over the course of the century', which is too far-off, and too vague to send a strong signal. We need to transition off fossil fuels by 2050 -- at the very latest.

Tell negotiators in Paris to set a long term goal for a just transition by 2050 at the latest, and pledge to keep upping their ambition every 5 years.   Link here to add your name.    And please share widely.

Many thanks,

Larry Dobson,  Secretary 350 Ottawa
