Sept. 10, 2014—After eight months of canvassing 20,000 doors in Somerset Ward, engaging more than 5,000 people through social media and email and meeting with hundreds of community and business stakeholders, Martin Canning released his campaign platform, The New Ottawa Plan, 2015-2018.
“I’m proud of what our team has accomplished. This platform is the result of a comprehensive engagement campaign to listen to all Somerset Ward residents and stakeholders. It’s truly a reflection of the ward’s top priorities and I’m happy to present this vision for a New Ottawa,” Canning said. “Our campaign platform has emerged as the most democratic and inclusive policy document a municipal campaign has ever seen. This has never been done in local political history in downtown Ottawa.”
Canning is running in Somerset Ward in the Oct. 27 municipal election to make Ottawa the most liveable, affordable and sustainable city in the country. He outlines six goals in The New Ottawa Plan to make this happen.
They are:
- Designing transportation options for people
- Forging healthy, community-focused, urban planning
- Building community through our local economy
- Shaping inclusive, representative, democratic government
- Driving city-wide, climate change leadership
- Investing in social and community infrastructure
As councillor, Canning will work to implement the 14 concrete objectives found in The New Ottawa Plan over the next four years. “I’m committing to implementing these campaign policies throughout my term as city councillor for Somerset Ward. They are all feasible and will result in a city that’s liveable, affordable and sustainable,” Canning said. “The New Ottawa Plan is only the beginning.”
