Welland, Ont. church member says shooter’s standoff with police was long time coming

A member of the small religious sect whose church was the scene of a tense standoff between police and an armed man in Welland, Ont., this weekend says the conflict was years in the making.
Justin Aldrich said Daniel Tronko, who was arrested Saturday after barricading himself inside the building, was well armed and prepared to fight to the end to protect the compound he owns, which he called the Church of the Higher Consciousness.

A trial set to begin Monday in British Columbia’s Supreme Court questions whether publicly funded faith-based hospitals should be allowed to prevent patients from receiving medical assistance in dying in their facilities.The Charter of Rights challenge is being brought by the advocacy organization Dying With Dignity Canada and the parents of a woman who was forced to leave a Vancouver hospital to receive medical assistance in dying, known as MAID.
