Ottawa Now - North Glengarry cattle farmer has beef with proposed high-speed rail project

February 23, 2026

The construction of Canada’s first high-speed rail project is slated to begin in just 3 years. It is meant to connect Quebec City to Toronto, although the initial phase will just run from Montreal to Ottawa. Alto, the Crown corporation that was chosen to build this service, is currently holding consultations. However, general reactions have been mixed. Some cities are lobbying to get the route closer to them. And then, you have the MP for Lanark-Frontenac, who has launched a petition against the project. That’s because the service, while convenient and quick, would be stepping over property lines. Such is the case for Michael MacGillivray, who owns Kirkview Farms in North Glengarry. It’s an organic beef farm that has been run by several generations of cattle farmers – and stands directly in the path of this project. He joins Kristy Cameron on today’s Ottawa Now.
