We are taking a gander at what’s been happening in Cuba over the past few days. On Monday, the country’s electrical grid collapsed, plunging 11 million residents into darkness. On Tuesday, Cuban officials reported that the country had been reconnected. But for Cuban Canadians, the mission to connect with relatives has been very challenging, especially as an American-imposed oil blockade remains in effect. Kristy Cameron checks in with Ottawa resident Eugenio Landeiro Reyes, who is also a member of the Cuban Canadians Coalition.

The Calgary Zoo's new polar bear made his debut Wednesday but it will be a while before he gets up close and personal with the current polar bear in residence. Yelle, a 500 kilogram, 20-year-old bear that arrived from Quebec has finished quarantine and made his way into the zoo's habitat, wolfing down caches of food that staff had laid out for him.
