Ottawa Now - Crossing guard's tragic death reopens debate about school zone intersection safety

March 24, 2026

An Ottawa crossing guard has died after he was struck by a truck near a Barrhaven elementary school. According to Ottawa Police, 55-year-old Peter Clark was working at Cedarview Road and Kennevale Drive at around 8:20 Monday morning when the incident took place. He was rushed to hospital and unfortunately didn't survive, while a 19-year-old male has since been arrested in connection to the hit-and-run. Meantime, families in Barrhaven are calling for immediate safety improvements around St. Juan Diego Catholic School after a child was seriously injured during pick-up and drop-off hours. Barrhaven West councillor David Hill says there are methods to fix these traffic problems, and he intends to assemble a team to discuss the problematic areas and implement solutions. Hill joins Kristy Cameron on today's Ottawa Now.
