The Manitoba government is planning to scrap the PST on all groceries, impacting items such as rotisserie chickens and junk food. Most basic groceries are already exempt from Ontario’s HST but, beyond raw ingredients, food is taxed in our province. Should they be? Kristy Cameron poses that question to Mike Von Massow, a Food Economist with the University of Guelph. Meantime, firefighters were successful in containing a ByWard Market blaze on Monday night, which came dangerously close to spreading to other buildings. Municipalities across Ontario say they can no longer foot the bill for provincial programming like social services and health care, saying they face an “unsustainable” funding shortfall of billions of dollars annually.

OTTAWA — Some RCMP body cameras in Alberta and B.C. aren’t just recording people anymore, they’re writing about them too. For months, the police force has been testing a new technology where artificial intelligence writes a draft report based on body camera audio of an interaction.
In July, the RCMP launched a year-long pilot project in eight B.C. and two Alberta detachments where audio from officers’ body cameras is uploaded into an AI transcription service to automatically generate a draft incident report. The force budgeted up to $200,000 for the test.
