Conservatives call for zero gas taxes for the rest of the year

April 2, 2026

OTTAWA — With prices at the pump spiking due to the war in Iran, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre is calling for the government to zero out gas taxes for the rest of the year.

The party estimates that the plan would save Canadians about 25 cents a litre when they fill up their cars. The Tories say that would bring Canadian prices roughly in line with the price Americans are paying at the pump.

“While the Iran war explains the sudden rise in world oil prices, it does not explain why Canadians pay so much more than Americans. Liberal taxes force Canadians to pay 28 cents-a-litre or 20 per cent more than in the United States,” said Poilievre, in a press release announcing the plan.

The Conservatives say the plan would eliminate the fuel excise tax, the clean fuel standard and the GST on gas. The excise tax and GST would be removed until the end of the year and the fuel standard tax would be eliminated permanently.

More to come.

OTTAWA — Prime Minister Mark Carney said Thursday that politicians travelling to Washington who are not part of his government often return home not having learned “anything new” about Canada-U.S. trade. He added that the same can be said when it comes to gleaning information about the state of ongoing discussions and the status of negotiations. “In the end, there’s one negotiator for Canada, and that is the Government of Canada,” Carney said, speaking at an unrelated announcement in Oakville, Ont. “Our interlocutors in the United States are generous people. They’re generous with...
